Q. How is YCGrown different from other CSAs?
A. YCGrown is a cooperative--in other words, it's a group of farmers and ranchers in Yavapai County who are working together to build up the supply of local and seasonal food. We believe in cooperation over competition. This means that by having multiple growers and producers, we can offer more variety, and if there is a crop failure, you the consumer, won't miss out on anything because we have back-up growers throughout the county. Also, because we are a co-op, we can be more flexible and accommodating to your needs, payment plans, and schedule, unlike single-farm CSAs.
Q. What is in the typical weekly share?
A. The season begins with lettuce, greens, root vegetables and crucifers, such as broccoli and cauliflower. As spring turns to summer, we add onions, tomatoes, corn, melons, summer squash, fruit and other summer favorites. Then, as the weather starts to change, we add in the fall and winter vegetables: potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash and so on. There's lots of variety, and lots of your old favorites!
Q. What is the difference between a half share vs. a whole share?
A. A half share is ideal for one or two people--it has 6-9 items (i.e., a bunch of carrots, a clove of garlic, a bag of kale). It provides $16 worth or more of produce. A full share ($26) is good for families or those who eat a lot of vegetables. It provides 7-12 items.
We now offer the Bi-Weekly Shares, for those who have smaller veggie needs
Q. What are the optional shares?
A. Optional shares currently are grass-fed beef, fresh bread, eggs and seasonal pork. Other products may be ordered as individual items from YCGrown's online store.
Q. Do you have fruit in the share?
A. We sure hope so! One of the beauties of eating locally and seasonally is that each week's share is dependent on what's in season now, as well as what the weather gods and goddesses have allowed! With our warm winter/spring weather, fruit has been looking exceptionally good... and then sometimes we get a late season frost. We'll see how it turns out this year. However, our growers in the Verde Valley have a different climate, and often we get an abundance of fruit like peaches, plums, pears and apples from them. We also have been getting wonderful citrus from our growers in the valley.
Q. What's available in the on-line store?
A. The online store is where you can find special items for purchase. Although we think everything we produce is special, these items are special in some unique ways! They may be in abundant supply (like tomatoes or cucumbers for canning/pickling), or they may be items for occasional orders, such as bread, tortillas, dried spices, jam, pickled veggies and eggs, or chicken.
Q. How do I access the on-line store?
A. Once you create an account, you can access the store and view or order items anytime by logging in to your account and then clicking on the store choice. Any items you order will be added to your next delivery.
Q. What if I don't like something in the box?
A. Each week, we provide a box of trade items. If there is something in your share that you don't like, trade it for an equally-valued item that you do like!
Q. How many farms and ranches produce for the Co-op?
A. Each season, the Co-op works with 10-20 producers--it varies depending on the year, the weather, etc.
Q. Can my farm produce for the Co-op?
A. We welcome new growers who share our commitment to sustainable, local agriculture and our desire to raise up Yavapai County agriculture cooperatively. Call or email us to discuss becoming a member.
Q. What are the Co-op's growing practices?
A. The Co-op's member farms and ranches practice sustainable farming and ranching, using as little water as necessary. They use non-GMO seeds, and many of the crops are heirloom varieties (open-pollinated, non-hybridized). They also use natural fertilizers, organically-approved pesticides and other methods to control pests and disease. Our ranchers utilize non-GMO feed, as well as humane and sustainable production methods. If you would like more specifics on members' production methods, please contact us.
Q. Is my payment information secure?
A. Yes--Farmigo's payment system and those of its credit/debit/check processors (PayPal) are PCI DSS- (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard-) compliant. PCI DSS is a proprietary information security standard for organizations that handle branded credit cards.
